Marin Marais (Born: 31 May 1656, Paris, France, Died: 15 August 1728, Paris, France) was a pupil of Jean-Baptiste Lully and of the viol player Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe. He was hired as a musician within 1676 to the royal court of Versailles. He did quite easily when court musician, & within 1679 was appointed "ordinaire de la chambre du roy pour la viole", the title he saved until 1725.

He was an expert of the viola da gamba, and a leading French composer of viol music. He wrote 5 books of "Pièces de viole" for the instrument, typically suites sustaining basso continuo. These were quite popular around the court, & for these he wwhen remembered in late years as he world health organization "founded and firmly established the empire of the viol" (Hubert le Blanc, 1740). His more works include operas, "Alcione" (1706) being noted for its tempest scene.

He featured as a central character in the film Tous les matins du monde (1991), which is an imagined life of Monsieur de Sainte-Colombe, and Marais' music estimated conspicuously in this film. One of his hanker & best known works, Sonnerie de Ste-Geneviève du Mont-de-Paris (1723) featured in that film also as an electronic version in the cult classic Liquid Sky.
